Golf sports psychology insights to improve your performance

Golf sports psychology is being written about more and more these days. More amateurs and club golfers are starting to understand the importance of developing a strong mental game.

Here are four golf sports psychology insights, which have helped me tremendously over the years:

1. Understanding the roles of the right and left-brain

Your left-brain is the part that loves all the analytical stuff and your right-brain is the part that loves to keep things really simple, by using 'feel’ or imagination, for example. When playing golf, your left-brain is really useful for doing things like calculating the yardage from the pin, working out the line on a putt, etc. The right-brain loves to just play a shot, by simply ‘feeling’ what to do.

Tips:

- Let your left-brain do its thing, by making a few important calculations before hitting your shot, but don’t let it get involved in hitting shots – it will only make you think too much during a shot, which will cause poor results.

- As soon as you are ready to hit the shot, the right-brain must take over completely. This will give you the best possible result, as you will swing on 'auto-pilot', by simply ‘feeling’ the shot.

2. Accept your personality and golf with it

We all have different personalities and temperaments, but too often are we trying to be like other people, or play like other golfers.

Tips:

- If you are someone who does things relatively fast in everyday life, you will most probably benefit from playing your shots a little faster. Other people with less ‘activist-type' personalities, may achieve better results by taking a bit more time on their shots.

- Discover your own personality and play golf with it. Be yourself and see your results improve!

3. Understanding what concentration really is

Many people mistake concentration for trying. By trying too hard, you are actually not concentrating at all – you are simply ‘over-thinking’.

Tips:

- Optimum concentration takes place, when you prepare yourself well, but then follow that with a natural, free action – too may golfers carry on 'thinking' while playing their shots.

- Take time to prepare for each shot, but don’t overdo it - trust yourself to achieve a great result, without 'trying' while swinging.

4. Set goals, don’t have expectations

I used to take massive expectations into my golf rounds, which only placed huge pressure on me and lead to really poor results.

Tips:

- Expectations really ‘kill’ natural performance - setting goals is a better way to measure performance.

- Learn to set reasonable goals as opposed to placing expectations on yourself.

- I have personally found, that result focussed goals, hardly ever delivers great scores – I set goals like: Today is all about enjoying each shot or I will focus on playing one hole at a time. These kinds of goals take my mind off my scores and inevitably produce great results.
